What to do after an accident? | RI Driving school

Accidents are unplanned and unexpected road mishaps. There is one death per four minutes due to accidents in India. It is drunken driving which is one of the leading causes of road fatalities. Two-wheelers account for 25% of the total road crash deaths. There are 377 deaths every day, which is equivalent to a jumbo jet crashing every day. The state of Uttar Pradesh amounts to the highest number of road mishaps with two people dying every hour.

No one expects to be in an accident. But it can happen in the blink of an eye, whether it is your fault or someone else’s. Here is a step by step guideline suggesting things to do after an accident:

  • Stop the car and turn off the engine as soon as possible. It is an offense not to do so.
  • Switch the hazard lights on.
  • Check for any injuries to yourself and your fellow passengers.
  • Call the police and the ambulance immediately if someone is hurt or if the matter turns out to evade your control.
  • Time to remain as calm as possible. Do not lose your temper, take deep breaths to control your emotions.
  • Do not apologize or admit responsibility for the accident until you are completely aware of what happened, it will protect you from liability if it was not your fault.
  • Take down the details of the driver (registered owner or authorized) and the colliding vehicle.
  • Take down details of fellow passengers and witnesses to the accident.

Take pictures and make videos of the vehicle and the spot as evidence for legal procedures and insurance claims.
